There was a dynamic atmosphere in our Hobart office today as we celebrated International Women’s Day and reflected on the UN theme – “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
As advocates for people living with disability, this is particularly important messaging for us as the conversation around women’s empowerment, rights and inclusion often fails to take into account other aspects of their life including disability, sexuality, economic status, and culture.
During our International Women’s Day lunch, our Manager Complex Support, Beck Bewley spoke about the strides that Nexus continues to take in ensuring that women from all backgrounds are represented at all levels, and supporting them to play an active role in the development and direction of Nexus.
Beck also highlighted the flexible working options offered to all staff, emphasising the great benefit this has in keeping women engaged and able to participate in the workforce, regardless of family commitments outside of work.
After the speech, our staff watched an inspiring short talk on the perception of people with disability by Australian journalist and disability advocate Stella Young.
