Nexus celebrated International Day of People with Disabilities with the opening of our newly renovated supported living house in Ulverstone last week.
The house was officially opened by two residents of the house, Rodney and Kerrie who were delighted to cut the ribbon and welcome guests to their upgraded home.
Nexus staff, clients, and guests attended the event and shared ideas and experiences about the opportunities that updating supported living houses can offer to clients.
“I have more room to move around, and I am enjoying making my Sunday roasts in the new kitchen now,” Frances, another resident at the Ulverstone house said.
Later that day, Frances was thrilled to share her thoughts about the new looking Ulverstone home on ABC Radio Tasmania, and talked about how the new upgrades were making a difference in her life.
Another client was thrilled when they saw the renovated property for the first time. “Oh my goodness, it’s all new, new everything, I love it!” they said.
Nexus Team Leader, Louise, has a particular passion for supporting clients to develop their independence and says the spaces created through the renovations are “definitely a winner”.
The clients in the house enjoy trying their hand in the kitchen and love helping cook dinner for their housemates.
“Our fresh and new open kitchen is already helping clients to be as independent as possible and allows them to use their different capabilities,” Louise said.
After beginning services in North West Tasmania last year, Nexus implemented the renovations as part of a larger program to update the existing Supported Living houses to better meet the unique needs of clients and support them to live the life they choose.
“This renovation is a great example of how our clients are engaged and actively contribute to shaping the way they live their lives,” Nexus CEO Mark Jessop said.
The house now features a brand-new kitchen, new furniture, improved sleepover staff facilities, and other general improvements.
