Last week, the Nexus team attended the Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania (NHT) Conference 2024 in St Helens.
We were proud to sponsor the morning tea and have our CEO, Mark Jessop, provide an overview of the ways that Nexus and NHT can work together to provide training and employment opportunities in the disability sector for more people in the community.
Sharing the journeys of a couple of our staff, Mark highlighted that our staff come from diverse backgrounds, but all share a genuine passion for supporting people living with disability.
Nexus Complex Support Manager Beck Bewley and Learning and Development Coordinator Kylie Millard spoke with attendees, discussing the barriers to disability employment their clients face and how Nexus can assist in breaking down these barriers to becoming a Support Worker.
Common barriers that people raised were not having a Working with Vulnerable People Card (WWVP), police checks, qualifications or experience in disability support. Nexus is endeavouring to work with NHT to engage with their community members to work through some of these barriers.
We look forward to working with Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania in the future.
